LANSING — New bipartisan bills in the Michigan Legislature would allow alcohol sales at college basketball, football and hockey games.
U-M and MSU are outliers in the Big Ten in not permitting alcohol sales at college sporting events, according to a Thursday news release from lawmakers. Eight of 14 Big Ten schools allow such sales, the release said.
“This is a fairness and freedom issue that will allow for a modern, more enjoyable college game-day experience — but it’s also a public health and safety issue,” said state Rep. Graham Filler, R-Greenbush Township.
“Data from universities in other states clearly shows that the number of alcohol-related incidents inside stadiums declines when alcohol sales are allowed.
