LOS ANGELES -- Charles Matthews played so well in Los Angeles that he won an award he didn't even know existed.
Matthews led all scorers with 17 points in Michigan's 58-54 Elite Eight win over Florida State Saturday. Two nights earlier, he'd scored 18, all while playing excellent defense and leading Michigan in rebounding over the two games at the Staples Center.
For his efforts, Matthews was named the West Region's Most Outstanding Player.
"I didn't even know they gave out MVPs for the region," he said afterwards.
Matthews, who was inconsistent for much of the Big Ten season, picked up his play during the Big Ten Tournament and has carried Michigan at times during its Final Four run.
