Both Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly and Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh had expressed an interest in resuming the matchup. In order to facilitate the 2018 game, Michigan is canceling a 2018 game against Arkansas. That comes at the cost of the $2 million.
The two teams have not played against each other since 2014, when Notre Dame beat Michigan 31-0. The two schools have played 42 times since 1887. It was a yearly game from 2002-14. The 2018 game will end the longest break between the two squads since 1978. Notre Dame and Michigan did not play each other from 1943-78.
Notre Dame will host the 2018 matchup. Michigan will host the 2019 edition of the rivalry.
