The Michigan Wolverines landed grad transfer Casey Hughes from Utah this offseason, and he's expected to bring valuable experience to Michigan's defense.
However, head coach Jim Harbaugh is unsure how the Wolverines plan to use Hughes yet.
"To be determined," Harbaugh said. "I think he has the ability to be a corner. Also has the ability -- by what compiles our best secondary -- to be a nickel or a safety. I think he's got the ability to be all three of those.
"[He brings] coverage ability plus tackling ability. He's made quite a few tackles, and he's a strong tackler."
Both of Michigan's starting safeties - senior Tyree Kinnel and junior Josh Metellus - are back from last year's team, and while there will be competition for both spots, both players are expected to keep their starting roles.

That likely means Hughes will be used as a cornerback. Defensive coordinator Don Brown has mixed in 3-3-5 and 4-2-5 formations throughout the past several years, and Hughes will likely play nickel in those packages. It remains to be seen if he will start on the outside.
Hughes appeared in 11 games this season, racking up 35 tackles with 2.5 tackles for loss with a sack and one pass deflection.
