Michigan defensive tackle Rashan Gary is projected to be a top-five overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, but when speaking to reporters at the Wolverines’ Prospect All-Position camp this weekend, his budding professional career appears to be far from his mind.
“I’m focused on going to the Big Ten, winning it, going to the national championship and winning it,” Gary said. “I’m just focused on the season. I ain’t even thinking about the NFL, to be honest. I’m focused on the season, focused on my brothers and what we’ve got right ahead of us. It’s right there, we’ve just got to go get it.”
Michigan is coming off an 8-5 season and has not won a national championship since 1997, but with a team full of top recruits and returning starters at virtually every position, it's clear what their goal is.
“I need a national championship. I need that,” Gary said. “That’s something that me and (Devin) Bush and our whole 2016 class was talking about, is winning that national championship. That’s something I need a taste of.
“I’m not thinking about (the NFL). I’m focused on the season and my brothers.”
Gary is one of three defensive linemen - along with Ohio State's Nick Bosa and Houston's Ed Oliver - who are projected to be either top-five or top-10 picks in the 2019 draft. Oliver has already declared his intentions to enter the draft.
The 6-foot-5, 281-pounder, who was the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2016 recruiting class, recorded 58 tackles with 11.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks last season.
