The Michigan Wolverines still have a quarterback competition on their hands between Iowa Hawkeyes transfer Jake Rudock and incumbent Shane Morris. Rudock has been deemed the slight favorite by sources close to the team's fall camp although head coach Jim Harbaugh hasn't publicly indicated either way. Regardless, Rudock's personal QB coach is doing everything in his power -- verbally and otherwise -- to push his guy over the top.
"He doesn't get rattled, he's very focused, he's able to compartmentalize things very well," QB coach Ken Mastrole said, via the Detroit Free Press. "When he steps on the football field, it's all about football, he's in to the game plan. When he's in the classroom, it's all about the classroom."
Mastrole flashed back to a particularly hot summer day a few years back where he pushed Rudock to the limit during a workout session. Rather than slinking off to get some shade after the session, Rudock spent an extra 20 to 30 minutes working through his drills.
"I thought the kid was kind of beat, but the kid turned it up another level," Mastrole said. "I said, 'That's a kid I know that really wants it.' ... A lot of guys go through a structured workout, and once it's over wrap it up and head home. But the initiative to go on and do it for another 20-30 minutes … appreciated that."
While Rudock has sometimes received the knock of being too much of a game manager and not enough of a creator of his own opportunities, his work ethic and drive are two big factors in his corner with less than a week to go until the start of the 2015 college football season.
