Michigan Wolverines defensive coordinator DJ Durkin met recently with Maryland Terrapins officials and has emerged as a top contender for the team's head coaching position, a source told Yahoo! Sports.
While no job offer was made to Durkin during his meeting with Maryland's brass, Terrapins representatives reportedly came away extremely impressed with the 37 year old. A well-regarded recruiter, Durkin is seen by many as the secret weapon in first-year UM head coach Jim Harbaugh's recruiting boon for the 2016 cycle.
Under Durkin, Michigan's defense is giving up just 14.9 points per game (down from 22.4 in 2014) and 263 yards per contest (down from 311). He'll have a chance to add yet another notch to his belt if the Wolverines can hold back a reeling Ohio State Buckeyes defense in this week's rivalry clash.
Durkin worked for Harbaugh at Stanford back in 2007-09. He rose to prominence as a hot coaching candidate while working under Will Muschamp at Florida. He offered no comment when asked about the Yahoo! report on Wednesday.
While there's no indication as to how many coaches Maryland has interview since letting Randy Edsall go in October, we do know that they've been extremely busy. The reported reasoning behind letting Edsall go so soon was to get a leg up in the interviewing process while lame duck coaches remain in position for other programs until the regular season ends.
