Hawkins said he chose Michigan over fellow finalists South Carolina and Temple. He had 28 verbal offers altogether.
"When I went on a trip to Michigan I loved it," Hawkins said. "It had everything I'm looking with the coaches, players, academics and facilities."
He even had a chance to spend some quality time with new head coach Jim Harbaugh during his stay in Ann Arbor.
"He's a good guy," Hawkins said of Harbaugh. "He sat down and talked to me. He's not like other head coaches."
Hawkins marks Michigan's 21st verbal commit of the Class of 2016 and the program's second from New Jersey. His teammate, four-star defensive end Ron Johnson, committed to the Wolverines back on June 25.
