Analyzing How Michigan's Defensive Players Performed At The 2017 NFL Combine, via Chat Sports

The 2017 NFL Combine is now over and 14 Michigan Wolverines are present. We're focusing on the defensive players and breaking down of how they've fared at the Combine. The interviews and medical checks are critical for players, but we're focusing on the measurements and drills, since how the players fared in the interviews and medicals aren't out here. Here's how the nine Michigan defensive players fared at the Combine.

Taco Charlton, DE

Height: 6'6"
Weight: 272 lbs
40-Yard Dash: 4.92 secs
Bench Press: 25 reps
Vertical: 33 in
Broad Jump: 116 in
3-cone drill: 7.17 secs

Charlton performed extremely well in all of his athletic testing and did very well in the drills. He even went through some of the linebacker drills, with caught the attention of NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock.

“It’s interesting,” said Mayock during the live broadcast of a drop-back drill. “I think he’s going to be a hand-in-the-dirt guy, but if you can drop occasionally – and he did very well there – I don’t care if he catches the ball there. What you’re looking for is: How smooth (is he?) This is a 45-degree drop. You’re in a curl (area) and then you react to the flat (pass).”

He definitely helped himself with an outstanding combine.

Ryan Glasgow, DT

Height: 6'3"
Weight: 299 lbs
Arm Length: 32 7/8 in
Hand Size: 9 7/8 in
40-Yard Dash: 5.13 secs
Bench Press: 20 reps
Vertical: 27.5 in
Broad Jump: 105 in
3-cone drill: 7.55 secs

The former walk-on had a solid combine, and didn't really do anything to effect his stock either way. However, he told the Detroit Free Press that he did very well in interviews.

“Yeah, I had some football stuff, like one of them was, ‘Name as many plays as you can from your old defense in one minute,’” he said. “He cut me off after 30 seconds because I was rattling them off pretty good. I definitely practiced because I knew they were going to ask something like that – just how well you recall a defense. Stuff like that. Draw plays; how you would play a block.

“I think there’s a place for me [in the NFL]. I think there’s a place for the type of player I am and what I can do for a team and an organization. I think for sure I’ll find a spot and I’ll make it my home.”

Chris Wormley, DE

Height: 6'5"
Weight: 297 lbs
Arm Length: 33 1/2 in
Hand Size: 10 3/8 in
Bench Press: 23 reps

It's tough to get a full read on Wormley from the combine, as the bench press was the only thing he did. He will do a full workout at Michigan's pro day on March 24.

Ben Gedeon, ILB

Height: 6'2"
Weight: 244 lbs
Arm Length: 32 5/8 in
Hand Size: 10 in
40-Yard Dash: 4.75 secs
Bench Press: 27 reps
Vertical: 34.5 in
Broad Jump: 119 in
3-cone drill: 6.98 secs

Gedeon did more reps on the bench press than any other linebacker, and while his 40-yard dash time wasn't great, he tied Wisconsin's T.J. Watt for the fastest 20-yard shuttle run (4.13) among linebackers. He is still projected to be a late-round pick, but he definitely helped himself.

Jeremy Clark, CB

Height: 6'4"
Weight: 206 lbs
Bench Press: 20 reps

Clark also only did the bench press since he is recovering from an ACL injury, which is why it was a surprise he was invited to the combine. He won't work out at Michigan's pro day, either, but he did get to interview with all 32 NFL teams.

Jourdan Lewis, CB

Height: 5'10"
Weight: 188 lbs
Arm Length: 31 in
Hand Size: 8 3/4 in
40-Yard Dash: 4.54 secs
Bench Press: 15 reps
Vertical: 34.5 in
Broad Jump: 121 in

Lewis' size obviously stands in his way of being a high selection, but tested out well everywhere else and in on-field drills. In fact, some think he would be a first-round prospect if he was bigger.

“If he were bigger he would go in the first round," a director of scouting for an NFC team told NFL.com. "Love everything about the way he plays. He’s cocky and tough and doesn’t take any (expletive) from anyone. And sub-package teams will love him because he won’t kill you against the run.”

Channing Stribling, CB

Height: 6'2"
Weight: 175 lbs
40-Yard Dash: 4.6 secs
Bench Press: 5 reps
Vertical: 31.5 in
Broad Jump: 114 in
3-cone drill: 6.94 secs

Stribling's performance at the combine definitely hurt his draft stock. His 40 time was among the slowest cornerback times, and his vertical was the fourth worst among CBs. He will need to have a much better workout at Michigan's pro day.

Delano Hill, SS

Height: 6'0 1/2"
Weight: 216 lbs
40-Yard Dash: 4.47 secs
Bench Press: 27 reps
Vertical: 33 1/2 in
Broad Jump: 114 in
3-cone drill: 6.96 secs

Hill opened more eyes at the combine than any other Michigan player. His 40 time definitely turned some heads, showing the speed to go along with his good size. A player who came into the combine on the fringe of being drafted, Hill did a lot to ensure he'll hear his name called in the late rounds.

Jabrill Peppers, SS

Height: 5'10 7/8"
Weight: 213 lbs
40-Yard Dash: 4.46 secs
Bench Press: 19 reps
Vertical: 33.5 in
Broad Jump: 128 in

Peppers had a great performance at the combine, flashing his extreme athleticism in testing and looking very fluid and explosive in drills. That put any doubts to rest about his ability to play safety, which he emphatically stated will be his position in the NFL. Nailing that down and performing well ensured he will be a first-round pick.
