The University of Michigan's Zak Irvin has been named the Big Ten's freshman of the week after a breakout performance against Coppin State Friday afternoon.
Irvin was coming off of a difficult performance in the championship game of the Puerto Rico Tip Off, in which he shot just three for 14 from the field in 26 minutes. Though the freshman looked timid at times in Puerto Rico and shot just five for 20 in three games, he bounced back to lead Michigan in its 87-45 dismantling of Coppin State.
Irvin led all scorers with a career-high 24 points and shot an incredible nine for 13 from the field. His three assists and 60 percent shooting from beyond the arc (6/10) were also career highs. Irvin added five rebounds and zero turnovers to his stat line.
John Beilein's top 2013 recruit is now averaging 7.4 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. He will have an opportunity to prove himself on the big stage Tuesday night when the No. 22 Wolverines travel to Cameron Indoor to battle No. 6 Duke in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge at 9:15.
