San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh has been the lead candidate to become Michigan's new head football coach after the Wolverines fired Brady Hoke following a 5-7 record this season.
According to CBS reporter Joe Pequeno of KPHO in Phoenix, Arizona, the school has offered Harbaugh a deal that would make him the highest paid coach in football at both the college and NFL levels.
The NFL Network's Ian Rapoport is also reporting on the deal, but says Michigan is offering slightly less money.
If those numbers are correct, the deal would pay him between $8-$8.17 million a year. Alabama's Nick Saban is the highest paid college football coach at $7.3 million a year, while New Orleans' Sean Payton and Seattle's Pete Carroll have the most lucrative contracts in the NFL at $8 million a year.
Harbaugh is thought of as one of the best coaches in the game, as he led the 49ers to three NFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl appearance in his first three seasons.
San Francisco is currently 7-7 this year, and have been eliminated from playoff contention.
