Why oh why do Notre Dame fans and media seem to jump the gun on the Irish any time they have a big win (or in some cases - see USC 2005, close losses) and start proclaiming the the Irish are BACK and that they are Returning to Glory?
The Irish has started 3-0 and are being projected as a BCS title contender by some national pundits while also being considered a shoe-in to beat Michigan this Saturday. Being irrelevant since 1993 and having a 3-0 start does crazy things to people.
Hell, the last 2 coaches at ND have had BOOKS written about them after their first mediocre seasons. In 2002, the Irish started 8-0. In 2005, they finished the 1st half of the season 4-2, prompting the school to give first year coach Charlie Weis a TEN YEAR CONTRACT.
2002 - Ty Willingham: Return To Glory
The book, published just prior to Notre Dames humiliating 5-7 2003 season, that included30+ point losses to Michigan, USC and Florida State, looks at the the 'Amazing" first season Willingham engineered at Notre Dame in 2002. The team went 10-3 and lost to NC State in the Gator Bowl. Glorious indeed.
2005 - Charlie Weis: The New Gold Standard
Willinghams's glory was short lived, and Weis came in to coach the team in 2005 and was beloved by Irish faithful after becoming the first Irish coach EVER to lose his first two home games as coach. The admiration for Weis came in that his team ALMOST beat USC, losing to the #1 Trojans 34-31 on a last second Matt Leinart TD run. The Gold Standard finished 10-3 with a blowout loss to Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl.
With Brian Kelly leading the Irish to their first 3-0 start since Willingham's 2002 team (yeah, it's been a decade), we can only imagine that a book is in the works for Kelly. So, what are the potential titles of the book that will undoubtedly be written about the third year Irish coach?
