I have learned that Michigan coach Brady Hoke and AD Dave Brandon have been quietly contacting a short list of potential offensive coordinators for over a week now.
Last week, I was alerted that Michigan had contacted Oklahoma co-OC Josh Heupel about taking the OC job at Michigan. I was unable to verify from a trusted source until today. As of today, I have now heard from a trusted insider that Huepel was contacted and that he was receptive. The initial contact took place BEFORE Oklahoma's victory against Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.
Huepel currently shares the OC duties at Oklahoma with Jay Norvell, which has been their situation for 4 seasons now. While some will scoff that Huepel would never leave his alma mater, and I agree it isn't incredibly likely, I was told that the co-OC role is something he is hoping to move past and he would like to run the show as a sole OC at a big program. Additionally, I was told that there are some in the Oklahoma athletic dept that have discounted him as a coach given that he has never had success without coaching under Bob Stoops. My source says that Huepel may see Michigan as an opportunity to prove himself as a highly capable coach, with an eye on returning to Oklahoma as head coach when Stoops decides to retire.
This is a HIGHLY dynamic situation, so stay with me and check my Twitter for other updates @acechatsports
