Michigan's defense suffered a blow on Saturday when sophomore DT Ondre Pipkins left the game with a knee injury, and the latest tests have confirmed Pipkins tore his ACL and will miss the rest of the season.
"You hurt for Ondre, and I really do because I coach him and he's in my meeting room every day," said Brady Hoke in a news release. "He was really starting to turn the corner on the field and become a productive football player for us. The good news is he's young, he's a great kid and he has a lot of great football ahead of him. We will help him get through this."
Michigan may pursue a medical redshirt for Pipkins, a former five-star recruit, but there could be some problems making the math add up. Pipkins has already appeared in five games this season, over the 30% limit that dictates whether a player can be medically redshirted.
Pipkins had been starting to see increased playing time with each game, and after sitting out the game against Notre Dame he had registered at least one tackle in each contest since. The 6'3, 308 lb player out of Kansas City responded on twitter, and Michigan fans will be happy to see his sense of humor is still intact:
This how special players are defined. I'm pretty sure #OptimusPrime had to overcome adversity and if he can do it so can I #PeeWeePrime
