Michigan sports, literature, and philosophy professor Yago Colas isn't happy with perceived double-standards being applied to former Michigan basketball player Mitch McGary -- especially in the wake of McGary declaring himself eligible for the NBA Draft after testing positive for marijuana usage.
In a blog post on his website YagoColas.com, Colas takes the NCAA to task for "hypocritically and parasitically [sucking] dollars out of the lifeblood of the talented young people I educate and who it swears it is protecting, even as it sinks its rapacious fans into their necks again and again."
Colas also directed his ire at the vocal segment of Michigan's fan base who made their negative feelings known on social media about McGary's purported life choices:
"Mostly I felt angry at Michigan fans who were sanctimoniously clucking and wagging their fingers at my student. Don’t get me wrong: I understand, to some degree, that they are passionate in their desire for the Michigan Men’s basketball program to win games. And I certainly agree that losing Mitch to the NBA draft will make that a more challenging endeavor next year than it otherwise would have been...But the brief spike in self-righteous vitriol directed against this young man still pissed me off."
To finish off, Colas advised McGary's critics to "step off," and perhaps "light up a J and relax."
"After all, no one is watching you…," said Colas, raising a debate around McGary which will most likely rage well into the 2014 NBA Draft.
