Led by a surprisingly efficient offense and a stout defense, Michigan leads Appalachian State 35-0 in the Big House.
'The Devins', Gardner and Funchess, led the offense, connecting on 3 1st half TD's to lead the Wolverines. Gardner was very efficient, going 11-12 for 153 yards and 3 TDs, while Funchess showed everyone why he deserves the new #1 jersey he sported for the first time, catching 3 TD's among his 7 catches for 94 yards.
The defense was stout, giving up only 74 yards and 4 first downs, completely shutting down the App State offense. Greg Mattison showed an aggressive style, with the d-line relentlessly pursuing the QB, while the secondary played tight coverage all half.
Additionally, Michigan's running game was ON in the 1st half, springing Michigan rushers for 181 yards rushing - with 99 for Deveon Smith and 85 for Derrick Green.
The real story in the first half was the Devin to Devin connection. Funchess looked like a man among boys and caught everything thrown his way and is on his way to a all-time career day for a Michigan WR. Gardner was 11-12 passing and looks very comfortable in the new-look offense under OC Doug Nussmeier.
Michigan LB Mike McCray blocked a App State punt with under a minute in the half, which was caught in mid-air by LB Ben Gedeon and returned for 29 yds for a TD to end the scoring.
