Yesterday, it looked like the Michigan Wolverines had a real chance to flip 3-Star Nebraska commit Daishon Neal. Today, it looks like those chances have evaporated into thin air.
Michigan had been very interested in Neal, a 6'7 strong-side DE with great speed off the edge. They extended an offer yesterday and visited Neal at home, and he had excitedly tweeted about both developments from his personal account.
During that in-home visit, defensive line coach Greg Mattison apparently said something that Neal and his father weren't happy about. Via ESPN CFB reporter Mitch Sherman:
In the process, Neal and his father, Abraham Hoskins Jr., ripped the Wolverines.
"They made one bad statement," Hoskins said of the Monday visit with Mattison, "and it ruined them. They said without football, Daishon wouldn't be able to go to Michigan -- like we couldn't afford to send him there or we couldn't get him [academically eligible].
"Once he said that, we pretty much escorted him out of the house."
Neal said Mattison "basically tried to call me stupid in front of my face."
Michigan still has plenty of recruiting targets left, and it's hard to see Jim Harbaugh losing any sleep over this, but it's still an unfortunate, avoidable recruiting misstep. With just nine players committed and eight days left to finalize their 2015 recruiting class, the Wolverines need all the help they can get.
