The Michigan Wolverines will take wins any way they can get them, but Saturday's ugly 10-9 victory over the Northwestern Wildcats pushed the boundaries of good taste when it comes to offensive ineptitude.
However, the offenses' loss was Michigan defensive end Frank Clark's gain, as he thoroughly outclassed the Northwestern offensive front all day long.
As Brendan F. Quinn of MLive.com puts it, "Clark was the standout. In the best performance this year by Michigan's front seven -- holding Northwestern to minus-9 yards rushing -- the senior defensive end bullied Northwestern's linemen all day and finished with seven tackles, one sack and two deflected passes. His final rush, coming on Northwestern's potential game-winning, two-point conversion, sent quarterback Trevor Siemian sliding to the turf before attempting a pass."
Michigan's bowl hopes have been buoyed with a two-game winning streak, keyed by a resurgent defense. Clark has been at the center of all of that, giving what was once a despondent Wolverines fan base hope as the regular season winds down.
