In this Michigan football news and rumors update, Michigan Wolverines head coach Brady Hoke and offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier remain behind fifth-year senior Devin Gardner as the team's choice at starting quarterback.
After a 31-0 rout in South Bend, the duo's public display of confidence in Gardner hasn't wavered, despite how impressed the staff has been with sophomore QB Shane Morris' progress.
"We're confident in (Morris), we're very confident," Hoke said, via Nick Baumgardner of MLive.com. "It's like every other position, right? If Willie Henry doesn't play well at the (defensive tackle spot), Chris Wormley or Matt Godin's going to be in there.
"(But) I think (Morris has a handle on the offense)."
And what about Gardner?
"He's our quarterback," Hoke stated again. "Now, he's going to (have) to prove it every week. He has proved it with how he's come (to work) at practice and how he's learning."
Proving it will require a huge improvement from the indecisiveness and troubling turnovers that plagued Gardner against the Irish. If he can do that, the whisperings of a benching could very well quiet down as soon as Saturday's matchup against Miami of Ohio.
