During his weekly question and answer session with MGoBlue.com, Michigan Wolverines head coach Brady Hoke declined to name a starting running back for Saturday's game against the Northwestern Wildcats.
Third-string halfback Drake Johnson lit up the Indiana Hoosiers this past Saturday, carrying the ball 16 times for 122 yards and a touchdown. In contrast, Michigan's top two backs, De'Veon Smith and Justice Hayes, ran for just 42 yards on 13 touches.
"We talk about competition all the time, and that will continue," Hoke said to MGoBlue.com (via Mark Snyder of the Detroit Free Press). He added that the three will likely rotate.
"How do you practice?" Hoke offered. "If you don't practice well, you're not going to play. That will stay the same, and they will challenge and compete.
"I think that what Drake has done is put himself in a better position."
