The San Francisco 49ers' final game of the 2014 NFL season is this Sunday, and multiple reports indicate that Jim Harbaugh will make his final decision regarding the vacant Michigan Wolverines coaching job shortly thereafter.
Will all signs pointing to Harbaugh returning to his alma mater, FOX Sports' Stewart Mandel sees this as Michigan's chance to hire their very own Urban Meyer:
That’s how good Harbaugh is. If he says no, it's not like Michigan is then doomed to 5-7 seasons until the end of time. It could hire any number of good college coaches capable of winning 10 games a year in Ann Arbor. But Meyer taking Ohio State to the playoff in the system’s first year only further demonstrated the gulf between the two rivals right now. As long as he’s in Columbus, it’s reasonable to expect the Buckeyes will be a playoff contender almost every year. I can’t say that about any prospective Michigan candidate but one. So yeah, it’d be a bummer if Harbaugh says no.
Hire Harbaugh, and the Wolverines finally will get the leg up in recruiting and pure passion that the program's rich history deserves.
