In what was very possibly the worst college football game of the decade, Michigan beat Northwestern thanks to a De'Veon Smith 3-yard touchdown run. Both sets of fans will remember this game for some time - not because of what happened on the field, but because the massive blooper reel will be everywhere.
Turning Point:
This one wasn't decided until Northwestern HC Pat Fitzgerald generously decided to go for two after scoring a touchdown with three seconds left. An extra point would have tied the game up, but Fitzgerald, like everyone else watching, had seen more than enough. Northwestern, true to form, gave away their formation before the timeout and was unable to convert.
Michigan MVP:
RB De'Veon Smith was the sole bright spot for a Michigan team that put on one of its worst performances in years (and considering how the last two years have gone, that's no small feat). Smith rushed for 121 yards and a TD on 18 carries, and was the only player on offense who looked legitimately dangerous today. We have to give DE Frank Clark some credit as well after a dominant performance up front.
Stat of the Day:
Michigan somehow won this game despite converting just one of twelve third down attempts.
On The Hot Seat:
Even if Brady Hoke beats Ohio State by 400 points, he'll still be gone at the end of the year...but today's result really turns the heat up on Northwestern's Pat Fitzgerald. Once one of the rising stars in the Big 10, Fitzgerald is now in serious danger of losing his job if he can't turn this ship around in a hurry.
What's Next:
The 5-5 Wolverines, despite their own best efforts, still have a real shot at a bowl appearance this year. They'll have the week off next week before trying to boost that resume at home against Maryland. Northwestern has now lost four straight, and they'll have to find some answers in a hurry before visiting South Bend to play Notre Dame next weekend.
