The Michigan Wolverines picked up their seventh commitment for the 2016 class when four-star offensive lineman/defensive lineman Michael Onwenu (Detroit, MI) announced his intent to play for Michigan on Twitter just hours after making an unofficial visit to campus.
The 6-foot-3, 365-pounder will be either an offensive guard or defensive tackle at the next level, but he's been recruited as an offensive player by Michigan.
It looked like Onwenu was going to sign with Ohio State earlier in his recruitment, but that began to change after former Buckeye assistant Stan Drayton left for the NFL. He also started developing a strong relationship with Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Tim Drevno.
"Coach Harbaugh, he's really like the fun coach -- the guy who is always hyped. He's hyped to work out, practice, watch film. Anything. I like that," Onwenu told MLive in March.
Onwenu is ranked as the No. 185 overall prospect in the 2016 class and the No. 6 overall player in the state of Michigan. He chose Michigan over offers from Alabama, Illinois, Miami, N.C. State, Ohio State and Penn State.
He joins four-star offensive tackle Erik Swenson, four-star quarterback Brandon Peters, four-star running back Matt Falcon, three-star linebacker Dele Harding, three-star linebacker/fullback David Reese, and three-star running back Kingston Davis in Michigan's 2016 class.
