What was reported on Twitter late Saturday evening, and confirmed by a father of a Michigan band member to Chat Sports, many (but not all) members of Michigan's marching band have been asked to return to campus early to participate in a 'Major Event' planned for Tuesday on Michigan's campus.
That event: Announcing Jim Harbaugh as head football coach. While we are not sure whether the band will used for any additional events other than the 3pm basketball game against Illinois, we do know that Monday and Tuesday will be a 48 hour celebration on Harbaugh in Ann Arbor.
Starting Monday: Jim and his parents will be present at a private welcoming dinner on Michigan's campus where over 50 former Wolverines players (many Jim's teammates) are expected to attend.
Tuesday: Harbaugh will be announced officially as Michigan's coach at a press conference, which we are hearing will take place at either 12pm or 1pm ET.
Following the press conference, Harbaugh will meet with the Michigan team and introduce himself to the players that he will coach in Ann Arbor (many of whom are expected to cut their Christmas breaks short to return to campus and meet their new coach).
Following the player meet and greet, Harbaugh will be introduced to what we expect to be a roaring reception at the Crisler Center for Michigan basketball's Big Ten opener against Illinois. We assume the band members will play a large part in making the announcement of Harbaugh to the crowd incredible.
