College football is unique in that a single loss could mean the difference between a conference championship appearance (or the ultimate regular-season goal, a College Football Playoff spot) and ending up in an average bowl game. The Michigan Wolverines found that out the hard way last year, losing their two regular-season games by a combined four points.
If the Wolverines want to reach their goal of winning the Big Ten and competing for a College Football Playoff, they need to win some of the most challenging games on their 2017 schedule. Those games won't be easy, but they are of vital importance to Michigan's playoff hopes. With that in mind, here are Michigan's five toughest games in 2017.
5. vs. Michigan State Spartans - Oct. 7
Yes, Michigan State was terrible last season. And, yes, Michigan will be heavily favored in the Big House. But rivalry games are always tricky to navigate and the Wolverines will be Michigan State's best shot. Plus, the rest of the games shouldn't be a major challenge. The other road games (not listed on here) are Indiana, Purdue and Maryland.
4. vs. Florida Gators - Sept. 2
The season opener at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Michigan will essentially be breaking in a team full of new starters on the national stage against the two-time reigning SEC East champs. It's a tough way to start the season, but also a game Michigan will be favored to win given Florida's offensive struggles. If this were a true road game, it would rank higher.
3. at Wisconsin Badgers - Nov. 18
One week before hosting Ohio State, the Wolverines travel to Camp Randall to take on Wisconsin. This will easily be the Badgers' biggest game of the year, since they don't play PSU or OSU. It's Wisconsin's best chance to prove their worth to the selection committee and a must-win for both squads.
2. at Penn State Nittany Lions - Oct. 21
Penn State became a different team after a blown out loss to Michigan, and the reigning Big Ten champs want get revenge for that loss. This game will likely go a long way in determining the Big Ten East champ. Going on the road to Happy Valley won't be easy.
1. vs. Ohio State Buckeyes - Nov. 25
This one needs no explanation and it will almost always be at the top of the list. Ohio State vs Michigan usually results in a great game and this one will be especially heated after the way their last game ended. And, since it's in Ann Arbor, Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines will be expecting to win.
