The Michigan Wolverines are 3-0 and ranked No. 4 in the country, and they open conference play on Saturday when they play host to Penn State. Many think it will be Michigan's toughest test yet, but the Wolverines are clearly the better team. Here are three reasons why they're guaranteed to win this weekend:
3) The return of Jourdan Lewis
Michigan was without arguably the best cover cornerback in the country for the first three games of the season, but all indications are that he'll return to the field against Penn State. That isn't just going to take the Wolverines' offense to a new level - he will lockdown Chris Godwin, PSU's best receiver, which should severely handicap Penn State's offense
2) Penn State's lackluster defense
The Nittany Lions rank 77th in the country in points allowed per game (27.3), but excluding their season opener against lowly Kent State, that number jumps to nearly 35 points per game - a number that would rank 107th. Pitt and Temple aren't exactly known for their dynamic offenses either, so a Michigan team that is averaging 53 points per game should have a field day against them.
1) Wilton Speight's continued improvement
The biggest reason for Michigan's success this season had been the excellent play they've gotten out of the quarterback. Speight is in his first season as the starter and is playing like an experienced veteran, throwing for 686 yards and eight touchdowns to just one interception this year. He has total command of this offense and has the whole unit clicking and playing at a high level, which will allow them to have an easy time against a softer Penn State unit.
