Five-star defensive tackle Rashan Gary (Paramus, NJ), the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2016 class, announced that he has committed to the Michigan Wolverines over Clemson. He joins a Michigan class that now ranks No. 6 in the country.
Gary said he chose Michigan because it was a place where he felt "comfortable" and had many other academic opportunities for him. He becomes the first No. 1 overall prospect in a recruiting class to pick a Big Ten school since 2006.
The 6'4", 290-pounder has been the player of this class for a while because of his elite size, strength, and athleticism (4.74 40-yard dash). Jim Harbaugh and Michigan have been pursuing Gary for some time and were the favorite to land him. Gary's former coach, Chris Partiridge, is the new director of recruiting operations and former teammates Jabrill Peppers and Juwann Bushell-Beatty are already in Ann Arbor.
Clemson made a VERY strong push late and hosted Gary for an official visit this past weekend, and they made enough of an impression that he cut his list to just Clemson and Michigan shortly thereafter. That being said, the Tigers simply couldn't match the relationships Gary had built with Michigan.
