EAST LANSING – The last time Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio had to choose a starting quarterback, he chose the wrong guy. Though it was easy to see why — even then — Andrew Maxwell got the nod over Connor Cook.
Maxwell knew the system. Had seniority. Carried himself like a quarterback in all the crucial places. Except for behind the line of scrimmage after the ball had been snapped.
