Shortly after James Piot committed to play golf at Michigan State, head coach Casey Lubahn, who took that phone call in a grocery store, asked him about his collegiate goals. Lubahn suggested starting with All-Big Ten. Piot went even beyond that, saying All-America.
Turns out, he could've aimed even higher because, well, now, he's All-World.
Piot, the Canton native and Michigan State senior, became the first Michigan-born golfer ever to win the U.S. Amateur, rallying from three holes down through 27 holes and making a clutch 15-footer on the 35th hole of the day to beat North Carolina's Austin Greaser, 2 and 1, in Sunday's 36-hole final at Oakmont Country Club.
