East Lansing — The upset alerts were sounding Saturday afternoon at Spartan Stadium, but No. 2 Michigan State made enough plays in the second half to avoid what would have been a crushing defeat.
Leading by just seven points in the fourth quarter, the defense came up with two key stops for the Spartans (4-0), forcing a turnover and watching as the offense took advantage with two touchdowns to lock up a 30-10 victory over Central Michigan in front of 75,218.
Gerald Holmes scored on runs of 3 yards and 6 yards in the final eight minutes of the game after not playing in the first three quarters.
