EAST LANSING - The Michigan State hockey team dropped its Big Ten opener on Friday night at Munn Ice Arena, falling to No. 11 Minnesota, 4-2. Minnesota snapped a 1-1 tie with two quick goals in the second period that turned out to be the difference.
MSU (4-7-1, 0-1) goaltender Ed Minney made a career-high 40 saves, including 25 over the final two periods, to keep the Spartans within reach late in the game.
The night got off to a good start for the Spartans as JT Stenglein gave MSU a 1-0 lead just 3:30 into the opening period.
