Spartans Fall in Season Opener to Lake Superior State

SAULT STE. MARIE - The Michigan State hockey team dropped its season opener to Lake Superior State on Friday night at Taffy Abel Arena in Sault Ste. Marie by a score of 6-1. The Lakers scored four power play goals and outshot the Spartans 34-20. LSSU’s Owen Headrick had a goal and three assists to lead the Lakers.

Special teams were a factor throughout the game as a total of 31 penalties resulted in 23 power plays. Lake Superior State capitalized on 4-of-12 man-advantage opportunities and scored another goal while on a delayed penalty.

“We knew with the new officiating directive and emphasis on certain infractions that special teams would be a factor in the game,” MSU head coach Tom Anastos said.
