Flash back four years, to the beginning of Michigan State’s 2011 fall camp, the first glimpse of a team trying to follow up a Big Ten championship and a freshman class Mark Dantonio already had called one of his best.
Two newcomers stood out that day among a group that included Trae Waynes, Lawrence Thomas, Taiwan Jones and Connor Cook. Defensive ends Shilique Calhoun and Joel Heath looked like they might be too good to keep off the field, and they were said to have a chance to play throughout camp.
Ultimately, they redshirted for a team that gave MSU consecutive 11-win seasons.
