East Lansing — Michigan State’s defense is full of unknowns.
Can the Spartans create a pass rush after losing two of their top defensive ends from a season ago? Can they become effective at linebacker with an influx of new faces, both from within last year’s roster and the transfer portal? Can the secondary take a step toward competence after the defense ranked last in the nation in pass defense in 2021?
Those are all legitimate questions as No. 15 Michigan State prepares to open the season at 7 p.m. Friday against Western Michigan at Spartan Stadium.
