EAST LANSING — The buzz typically comes over what costume or outlandish feat Tom Izzo will display.

But what Michigan State basketball’s annual Midnight Madness signifies is undergoing an identity crisis.

It no longer marks the first practice. That opened last week.

It no longer begins at midnight. This year’s version at Breslin Center begins around 9:30 p.
