EAST LANSING – Matt Costello and Gavin Schilling have done for Deyonta Davis what Derrick Nix and Adreian Payne once did for them, a number of things that might not seem nice at the time — hip check here, extended elbow there — but serve a purpose.
“He’s definitely gotten a taste already,” said the 6-foot-9, 250-pound Schilling of the attempts he and the 6-9, 245-pound Costello have made to prepare the 6-10, 240-pound Davis for the rigors to come.
Of course, the freshman and McDonald’s All-America from Muskegon has given enough back — dunk with both hands here, swat in the face there — to keep the junior and senior humble.
