EAST LANSING — If anyone sensed a growing division between Michigan State’s vaunted defense and its developing offense, Joe Bachie’s smile erased it Saturday night.

It was the look of a proud captain and loyal teammate, one who four days earlier said, “Sometimes people need a kick in the butt.” One who trusted Brian Lewerke and his offensive counterparts to respond to the criticism with a better performance.
