EAST LANSING — Mark Dantonio made the right decision — two months too late.

Dantonio stepped down as Michigan State football coach Tuesday afternoon, ending a great career, two weeks after qualifying for a $4.3 million retention bonus.

Dantonio should have made this announcement at the end of the regular season.
