TEMPE, Ariz. - A shootout in Sonoran Desert it wasn't.
After racking up big offensive numbers in their season openers, Michigan State and Arizona State mostly traded punts and field goals on a sweltering night in the desert.
The Sun Devils got the last kick that counted, and it tagged the No. 15 Spartans with a loss in their first road game of the season. Brandon Ruiz connected on a 28-yard field as time expired to lift Arizona State to a 16-13 win on Saturday night.
Michigan State (1-1) had a 13-3 lead in the third quarter and a chance to widen the lead but failed to score on its final three possessions.
