Michigan State was mentioned on Tuesday in the high-profile federal college basketball corruption trial in New York.
But unlike most other major programs mentioned in the proceedings, Michigan State was brought up because it didn't break any NCAA rules on paying players.
Michigan State came into the picture as attorneys detailed the recruitment of former five-star recruit Brian Bowen, the Saginaw native who was once a primary recruiting target of the Spartans.
According to one of the attorneys, Michigan State stood out from other potential schools for its unwillingness to pay for Bowen's services.
"Michigan State was one of the only schools that was not going to pay Brian Bowen to go there," Steve Haney, the defense attorney for Christian Dawkins, said, according to the Arizona Daily Star.
