After three periods of back-and-forth action, No. 14 Michigan and Michigan State were knotted up at one goal apiece Saturday. It took a shootout for the Spartans to emerge victorious, 2-1, in Ann Arbor.
In the fourth round of the shootout, Michigan State senior forward Brennan Sandford beat freshman goaltender Strauss Mann and the Spartans pulled away with the extra Big Ten point and the weekend sweep.
Michigan senior defenseman Nick Boka opened the scoring a little more than 6 minutes into the first period on the power play. Boka received the puck from sophomore defenseman Quinn Hughes across the ice and fired a slapshot that beat Michigan State’s freshman goaltender Drew DeRidder.
