Michigan State football without starting LT Cole Chewins in opener

EAST LANSING — Michigan State football will open the season Friday night without starting left tackle Cole Chewins.

The junior is not dressed as the 12th-ranked Spartans prepare to face Utah State at Spartan Stadium (7 p.m., Big Ten Network).

Chewins, who has started 16 straight games at left tackle, was listed as the co-starter with Luke Campbell on the depth chart released Tuesday. Campbell also was listed as co-starter at right tackle with fellow sophomore Jordan Reid.

The Spartans, who went 10-3 last season, also will be without returning starting cornerback Josiah Scott (left leg) and backup defensive end Dillon Alexander (right foot).
