Michigan State football Payton Thorne boosted offense, so freshman QB gets another start

For the first time in a month, there will be no intrigue in who will start at quarterback for Michigan State football.

Mel Tucker made it clear: Redshirt freshman Payton Thorne will get the ball Saturday when the Spartans travel to Maryland to wrap up the regular season as junior Rocky Lombardi’s status remains unclear.

“Payton's gonna start this week, and then hopefully Rocky is gonna be available for us,” Tucker said during his weekly news conference Tuesday. “We'll just have to see how the week goes with him.”

Things went fairly well — other than the outcome in a 39-24 loss at Penn State — for Thorne during his first career start Saturday.
