EAST LANSING — New football coach Mel Tucker got more money from Michigan State to hire a staff — $6 million, to be exact.
The Spartans have spent $5,844,385 of that on the 10 assistants who have filled Tucker’s staff, according to documents obtained via the Freedom of Information Act. And they have considerably upped the pay of the men running the offense and defense.
MSU’s two highest-paid assistants will be offensive coordinator Jay Johnson ($975,000) and defensive coordinator Scottie Hazelton ($950,000).
