Michigan State, in an effort to reduce expenses during and beyond the coronavirus sports shutdown, announced Thursday it will cut its athletic department salaries, including 25-year basketball coach Tom Izzo and new football coach Mel Tucker.
Izzo, Tucker and athletic director Bill Beekman will be among those taking the biggest reductions, the school announced. Beekman’s salary will be reduced by 10%, while Izzo and Tucker will take 7% cuts.
“Although there is uncertainty about what the future holds, and impactful decisions are yet to be made, it’s safe to say that we will experience a significant reduction in revenue in the year ahead,” Beekman said in a release.
