The Chippewas opened the game with a 35-yard flea flicker to set up a field goal. Then, a CMU offense that was statistically one of the worst in FBS football coming in went quiet.

After that field goal on the opening drive, the Michigan State defense allowed just two first downs on its next eight drives. For the day, the Spartans allowed just 47 yards of offense a span on eight drives.
