Coming into his freshman year with Michigan State Basketball, Matt Costello probably had zero idea of what kind of success was headed his way.
Costello’s first season with the Spartans wasn’t exactly a successful one. He played just six minutes per game, averaging 1.5 points and 1.3 rebounds. As a sophomore, he saw his minutes more than double, playing more than 14 per contest — he averaged 4.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game.
It wasn’t until his junior year that he realized what a valuable asset he was to this team. Not blowing anyone away with his numbers, though, Costello played 20 minutes per game and averaged 7.
