Some unfortunate news came out of East Lansing on Monday night as the school announced via public statement that former Michigan State basketball coach Jud Heathcote passed away.

The former head coach led the Spartans to their first national title in school history in 1979. He passed away at the age of 90 in Spokane, Wash., where he resides.

Heathcote began his head coaching career in 1971 against Montana and then took the head coaching job at Michigan State.
