FLINT, MI -- The attorney for Mateen Cleaves is asking for a new judge in the ex-NBA and Michigan State basketball star's sexual assault case.
Attorney Frank J. Manley has filed a motion for disqualification of Genesee Circuit Judge Celeste Bell.
Bell worked as corporation counsel under Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton before she was appointed to the bench to replace former Genesee Circuit Judge Archie Hayman, who was initially set to hear the case prior to his retirement.
Corporation counsel serves as a legal adviser to the Genesee County Board of Commissioners and represents the county in civil matters.
