Mark Dantonio's retirement as Michigan State footballcoach caught everyone at the school completely off guard.
There were no indications Dantonio was headed out the door, multiple sources told the Free Press.
MSU President Samuel Stanley was informed by athletic director Bill Beekman Tuesday afternoon of Dantonio's decision to step down, university spokeswoman Emily Guerrant told the Free Press.
The power brokers of the university expected Dantonio to coach at least one more year.
